SDS - Student Direct Stream
SDS or Student Direct Stream was designed to fast track application processing through reduced paperwork. Other than the list of eligible countries, there are 3 major requirements of this stream:
-
English proficiency: You need to have minimum 6 bands in each module of the IELTS Academic Test
-
Upfront Tuition Fee payment: Students need to pay their first-year tuition fee in advance, before submitting the visa application
-
Guaranteed Investment Certificate, or GIC: Students need to open a GIC of CAD 10,000 prior to submitting a visa application. This amount is paid to the students over the first year, ensuring they do not run out of expense money.
-
-
Below is a sample disbursement schedule for a student, post initial CAD 2,000 disbursement that they can withdraw as soon as they land in Canada.
-
The reason IRCC asks for an upfront tuition fee and GIC is that it reduces a lot of paperwork and scrutiny of Financials. They don’t have to worry anymore if students can afford to pay tuition fees or living expenses.
If your program duration is just one year, you do not need to submit any other proofs other than GIC, however, it is highly recommended that If you have money sitting in the bank account, by all means, download a statement and attach it. Upfront Tuition Fee and GIC is the minimum requirement and you’re okay as far as you meet those, but again we must emphasise the financial strength of the applicant and the only way to showcase that is with your bank solvency.
Good Luck!
